Stop Press – New Toy!

While at a museum shop today in downtown Melbourne I happened upon the coolest little camera I’ve seen in quite some time. It’s the Lomography Fisheye 2. That’s right, it’s a fisheye lens, 35mm camera! You can expect to see some pretty interesting shots from it soon – watch this space!

Photo of the day – part II

Country Victoria – a Photo Essay

Pure Creativity

I wanted to share this photo with you all for one simple reason – the pure creativity behind it. At first glance you might think, “What’s the big deal, it’s a semi-sharp photo of Scott with a red filter thrown on it in post production.” But that’s where you are wrong. This photo was taken by my 8 year old nephew Tom – when Tom shot the photo his finger was covering the flash – so the flash outputted red light (hold a flashlight against your finger to get the idea). Perfect creative unencumbered innocence. Too often we as photographers and artists get stuck into the notion of controlling all of the elements that go into our art. When we let the reins out a bit and let the unexpected roll in the results can often be surprising and inspiring. Cheers Tom, thanks for the inspiration!

Awesome Shane McConkey Tribute Film

Shane McConkey was one of my heroes – not just in skiing or in the mountains but in life. He had a zest, a spark, a fire that no one will ever be able to replicate or forget. This is an amazing tribute film made by the fine folks at Matchstick Productions.

As a side note this photo is of Shane’s memorial in the Temple at this year’s Burning Man.

Lonely Planet’s 1000 Ultimate Experiences

Hot off the press and live at a bookshop near you – Lonely Planet’s 1000 Ultimate Experiences. I was one of several authors to contribute to this fun little coffee table book. Packed with, well, a thousand cool things to do, it’s a fine blueprint for those in need of a couple of items to add to their ‘Bucket List’. For my part I wrote two lists – ‘Best Destinations You Can Still Travel on the Cheap’ & ‘Best Boys or Girls Own Adventures’. Each list has 10 must do destinations or activities. Everything from global vagabonding around Sudan, India and South America to activities like shark diving, walking Serengeti safaris and flying to space. It’s a good read and a great Christmas gift – wow that’s the most flagrant bit of self pro-mo in a while…

Check it out HERE on the Lonely Planet website where you can virtually flip through it and order a copy for yourself.
